The Allure of Wood Model Ships
Wood model ships represent the most traditional ship models, and many believe the most beautiful as well. You can choose to build a wood model from scratch, using raw materials, or you can purchase a kit that contains pre-carved pieces and detailed plans for assembly. You'll find that kits come in two varieties -- European and North American. The European kits often feature gorgeous stained wood that doesn't need to be painted, but can be if you choose. The North American kits have pieces that almost always require you to stain or paint them. There are also different types of kits within these categories that include bread and butter, plank on frame and plank on bulkhead.
There are all kinds of model ship kits available. You can find many different boats to construct, such as sailboats, yachts, and historic ships. There are pirate ships, Viking ships, military ships and so many more. Kits come in various skill levels from beginner to advanced. The more difficult the skill level, the more intricate and involved the work will be. If you've got a young model enthusiast in the family, there are various kits made especially for kids. Some of these kits have pieces that snap together easily, while others have glue-together pieces but include non-toxic glue safe for youngsters. Speaking of glue, always do all your gluing and painting in a properly ventilated area with lots of fresh air.
It can often be fun to work on wood ship models in a group, especially if they're large and involved. Check with some hobby shops in your area to find out if such a group exists near you. Often, these groups create amazing recreations of many vessels which may even include background scenery and miniature people on the ships. At the least, you could join an online group to learn some tips and socialize with other enthusiasts. Another thing you can do online is shop for your kits. You can often locate hard-to-find items and get great deals, especially on Ebay.
Wood model ships can be more than just a fun hobby. Sometimes, the finished product can even be an investment item as you can find serious collectors in the market for handcrafted wooden scale ships. Also, nautical and ocean themes are big in interior design these days, and ship models fit right into this type of decor. Even if you don't sell your completed models, you can enjoy displaying them around your own home as a beautiful addition to any room.
