The Titanic Model Ship -- A Popular Choice for Hobbyists
The RMS Titanic just might be the most well-known ship in history. Not only is it famous for its massive size, but for its legendary sinking that inspired the extremely successful film of the same name starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet as doomed lovers. The extravagant ship sank on April 14, 1912, resulting in significant loss of life. To this day, explorers take sophisticated equipment to the bottom of the sea in an attempt to locate and recover lost treasures from the ill fated vessel. Many model builders choose a Titanic model ship as a project because it is challenging and historically significant.
You will have no problem locating a model kit of this famous ship in hobby supply stores, at online retailers or even on Ebay. There are model kits that feature wood pieces, metal pieces, or most commonly plastic pieces. Some kits come with pieces that are already painted, while others require you to paint each piece yourself. You'll find that kits come in varying skill levels for all types of builders from beginner to advanced. The more advanced the kit, the more intricate and detailed the work will be. An advanced kit will take a lot of patience and skill to complete.
Creating a scale model of the Titanic is something that will take some real effort and time. After all, the Titanic itself took effort and time to build. The difference is that your model is small and is not operational. You may want to make a replica of the ship itself, or you may want to make a more detailed representation complete with passenger figurines. Some builders even recreate other aspects such as the lifeboats and icebergs as well. How detailed and historically accurate you want to be is up to you.
Building a Titanic model ship with your older child or teen can be a rewarding activity that can bring you closer together. Not only that, but you can incorporate a good history lesson into the process. It's easier to teach a child something when they are involved in a hands-on activity that interests them. Model building also encourages patience, determination, attention to detail and the importance of following precise instructions. These are all great skills to work on with your child. The best part is that after the model is complete, you and your child will have something to show off that you made together.
