Tips and Techniques for Painting Model Ships
If you're new to the hobby of model ship building, you might be wondering if painting your models is something you will need to do. This actually depends on the model and/or kit you purchase. Some kits contain parts that are pre-painted while others require you to do the paint job. For those looking for a creative pursuit, the unpainted kits are probably going to be the most enjoyable. The majority of kits contain plastic parts, so make sure you get paint made for plastic if it doesn't come included. Sometimes you can find wood and metal models as well which of course require their own type of paint.
Some builders will tell you to paint all your pieces first, then assemble. Others will suggest you assemble the ship then paint the pieces. How you decide to do things depends on the type of model you have, your own personal preference and what the instructions say. If you've purchased an unpainted model kit, the plans will specify when to paint the pieces. Speaking of kits, some of them will include paint and a brush, although it's highly recommended to purchase separate brushes. The brushes that come with the kit may not be the ideal size, shape or quality.
Your local craft supply store or hobby shop will carry a variety of paintbrushes for different purposes. Look at the size of your model and its pieces before choosing a brush. For larger pieces, a larger brush will be needed. Of course, for tiny pieces you need a tiny brush. There are brushes so small you can barely see the bristles. These miniscule bristled brushes are perfect for detail work. Brushes come in different shapes as well as sizes. Flat brushes are good for most every purpose including fine details.
To learn more about painting model ships, read a book or two on the subject. Finishing Scale Ship Models: Detailing and Painting Techniques by Tom Gorman is an ideal volume for this purpose. Joining a group, either in your area or online, can also be a good idea. You'll get to learn tips from more experienced builders, ask questions and make new friends. Although many don't associate model building with creative thought as it is more methodical, the model painting process can certainly indulge your creative streak!
