How to Build Model Ships

The hobby of building model ships is one that is ideal for people who enjoy detail-oriented work. You'll find that many model ships contain lots of small pieces and are basically small versions of full-size ships with all the same parts. If you're not sure how to build model ships, you're in luck because the majority of hobbyist builders use kits. Model kits contain everything you will need to complete a project, including the parts, plans, glue and paint if needed. Some models come pre-painted while others do not. The most common material for models these days is plastic. You may also come across those made from wood, metal and even paper.

There are all kinds of ships that can be built. Choose a sailboat or yacht, or go with something bigger. You'll find all kinds of historic ships such as Viking ships, pirate ships, battleships and even replicas of famous vessels like the RMS Titanic. Another variation in the world of model building are the skill levels of the kits. The very easiest kits are those that snap together. These are perfect for kids because they don't require glue. A step up from this would be the beginner kits which do require glue but don't have lots of tiny parts or extensive plans. For more skilled builders there are advanced and intermediate kits.

The first thing you should do when you get your model home is find a good place to work. A well-lit and properly ventilated area is a must. Cover your work table with plenty of newspaper or cloth to protect the surface from paint and glue. Open the kit and read the instructions first. Then, arrange your supplies and parts so they will be easily accessible. After that, simply go step-by-step through the plans and assemble the ship as directed. If you have trouble picking up tiny pieces, try using a pair of tweezers.

Don't expect to finish a model in one sitting. Many builders take hours, days, weeks or even longer to complete a project. If you find yourself working on your model for hours at a time, take frequent stretching breaks and get some fresh air. When you're finished working on your model for the day, make sure you leave it undisturbed so any glue that's been applied can dry properly.
